Practitioners: Catherine Dean, M.Ac., Lic.Ac.
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a veterinarian or a nurse. As I grew up, psychology grabbed my interest, so after receiving my Masters in Education from U Mass Amherst, I enrolled in a family therapy institute. It was while practicing as a family therapist intern at Met State Hospital that I started receiving acupuncture. As I watched myself change from my treatments, I became clear that I wanted to be able to do that. I saw that I didn't have to choose between healing the body or the mind. Acupuncture treated both. I began my premed courses for acupuncture school and have never looked back.
I received my Masters in Acupuncture from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute in Columbia, Maryland in 1991, and was nationally certified and licensed in Massachusetts in 1992. I went on to take a two year graduate course in Traditional Chinese Medicine with John and Angela Hicks, and then trained with Ted Kaptchuk, world famous Chinese herbal practitioner and author, and was certified in Chinese Herbal Medicine in 1995.
I cofounded and had a private practice at Bigelow Street Healing Arts in Cambridge, and was Head Acupuncturist at Spectrum Medical Arts in Arlington, until I moved to Ireland in 2000, fulfilling a longtime dream. There I was welcomed into the rural community where I treated fishermen's sore elbows and farmer's sore backs, and all my friends and neighbors who came knocking on my clinic door.
While there I was lucky to receive training as a reflexologist by Patricia Swann, the foremost practitioner and teacher of reflexology in Ireland. And, by special request of my little sister, was also certified as a Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncturist by Virginia Doran. Though quite different from my original Five Element education, I have loved helping women and men feel better about how they look, while they also get healthier.
I am thrilled to join the Bodyography staff, as I love working in conjunction with other practitioners. I have often found that using a combination of treatment modalities helps healing take place more quickly. And the atmosphere of comraderie and support here in the Wellness Center creates a nurturing environment in which clients can relax and be treated in comfort.
My other interests include a long time vipassana meditation practice, watching Manchester United football (soccer) matches, and walking with my best friend Alice, a beautiful black border collie whom I brought back with me from Ireland. I look forward to meeting you, whether to help you deal with a serious health condition, a facial uplift, or just a quick relaxing treatment to relieve the stress of your busy life.
